B-Girl Be Summit

On Friday, June 3rd I took the day off work and headed down to the Intermidia Arts center where they were having a the B-Girl Be Summit. I sat in on a Women in Hop scholarship Panel, admired the exhibits, and was in awe by the aerosol art murals (apparently the building is a place that allows graffiti from 8am -10pm daily). I was put in my place by the high level of education and sophistication in the hip hop scene. People from all over the US came to celebrate the accomplishments of women in all elements of hip-hop culture.

Lady Pink (NYC pinksmith.com) definitely stood out as my favorite of the graffiti writers. Lady Pink’s canvases have entered art collections in such places as Whitney museum, the MET in New York, the Brooklyn museum and the Groningen Museum of Holland. Her and her husband create murals for a living.

ASIA ONE (bboysummit.com)
I also had the rare chance to watch Asia One break live. She has been breaking for 10 years and has been affiliated with The Rock Steady Crew, Eternal 2 Creations, Tony tee Dance Projects, and Malcolm McLauren’s Buffalo Girls. She currently holds it down with her production and dance company, No Easy Props Productions, est. 1997. Asia can be seen in numerous breaking videos and several rap videos including Run DMC, Blackalicious, DJ Swamp, and Malcolm McLauren’s “Buffalo Girls_Back to Skool” – Virgin Records.
